My pump is drawing a small amount of air in from the skimmer and small bubbles are going back into the return lines back into the pool. I have checked the cover gasket, drain plugs and no leak from the pump seal. Since my Hayward EC-65 is 20 years old,I have replaced parts for it as the years went by. This (sucking air) started last year as the season went on,no better,no worse. I was told that a bad impeller (worn out) can do this also. I dont think I have a leak in the underground suction line( I hope) I'm not losing any water that I know of. No leaks anywhere else. So, can a worn out impeller be bad? I have taken it apart, and the impeller looks OK,but does show signs of wear. One other thing,my filter is on a timer,6 hours on,six hours off. When I look into clear top of the basket,it is half full of water, where as years ago it stayed full after the filter shut down for hours at a time, and of course now as the timer kicks on for the filter to run it does draw air(for about 10 seconds) before it gets 98% of the air out of the sysyem. As I am typing this,it looks like I have a suction leak from my skimmer to my pump, which the hose is under about 10 foot of sidewalk then comes up through dirt in a small enclosed filter room.

Thank you,
Tom

Hi Carol.

Yes, Its probably the "pump seal". There is a mechanical seal between the pump and the motor.

Let me know if you need more help.

Try removing the cover of the strainer "pot" (Clean out and re-install the basket while you have the cover off) and fill the "pot"with water using a bucket or hose. Quickly put the strainer lid back on and try turning the pump back on. The pump should start to pull water and air and gradually more and more water and less air. If you keep getting air, you have a leak in one of the suction lines or a valve somewhere.
